The Complete Punta Cana Packing List (2027)

Packing for Punta Cana is deceptively simple — until you realize you brought three pairs of jeans, forgot sunscreen, and packed one nice outfit for a weekend that has three theme nights. This is the packing list we actually use for Caribbean trips, refined over years of forgetting things.

Clothing

The default outfit in Punta Cana is: swimsuit + linen shirt + slides. Build outward from that.

  • 3–5 lightweight tops (linen, cotton, breathable synthetic).
  • 2 pairs of shorts.
  • 1 pair of long lightweight pants for evenings or mosquitos.
  • 1 lightweight long-sleeve for excursions (SPF or thin cotton).
  • 1 dressier outfit for a nicer dinner or main event.
  • 1 light layer for over-air-conditioned restaurants.
  • Underwear + socks — pack one extra day's worth beyond your trip length.
  • Sleepwear that works if you have to open the door for room service.

For a festival weekend like Festopia Punta Cana 2027, add one "theme-night" outfit — most Festopia weekends have one all-white or neon-themed evening.

Swimwear

  • 2–3 swimsuits (they never dry as fast as you think).
  • 1 swim cover-up.
  • 1 rash guard if you burn easily or plan to snorkel.

Shoes

  • Flip-flops or slides.
  • 1 pair of sneakers or trail sandals for excursions (ATV, ziplining, hiking).
  • 1 nicer pair for dinner.

That's it. Do not bring more.

Electronics

  • Phone + charger.
  • Portable charger / power bank. Nonnegotiable for beach club days.
  • Camera or GoPro (optional).
  • Waterproof phone case or dry bag — buys you a lot of catamaran-day peace of mind.
  • Universal travel adapter — the DR uses US-style Type A/B outlets, so US travelers usually don't need one, but Europeans do.
  • Kindle or book.

Travel Documents

  • Passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your trip).
  • Physical or digital copy of your booking confirmations.
  • Physical copy of travel insurance.
  • Credit cards — bring two, in case one gets flagged.
  • $150–$250 USD in small bills for tips and taxis.
  • Vaccination records if required.

Medication and Health

  • Any prescription medication in original bottles.
  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
  • Loperamide (Imodium) — travel-basic essential.
  • Antihistamine.
  • Motion-sickness tablets for catamaran days.
  • Small first-aid kit: band-aids, antibiotic ointment, hydrocortisone.
  • Electrolyte packets — humidity + rum is a real combination.

Sunscreen and Skin

  • Reef-safe SPF 50 — required at many beaches, and better for your skin.
  • SPF lip balm.
  • After-sun aloe.
  • Bug repellent with DEET or picaridin — mosquitos are worst at dawn/dusk.

The Small Extras Travelers Forget

  • Reusable water bottle.
  • Dry bag for excursions.
  • Small waterproof pouch for phone/keys on the boat.
  • Ziplock bags for wet swimwear on the flight home.
  • Portable fan or handheld mister.
  • Earplugs (resort walls are thin).
  • A collapsible tote for beach days.

What NOT to Pack

  • Beach towels — every resort provides them.
  • Multiple pairs of jeans.
  • Formal shoes.
  • Full-size toiletries — resorts supply the basics.
  • Anything valuable you'd cry about losing.

Packing Cubes vs Rolling

Rolling works. Packing cubes work slightly better for group trips because you can dig through one cube on the way home without unpacking the whole suitcase. Either is fine.

Weather Reality Check

Punta Cana is 80–88°F basically year-round with an 80–82°F ocean. You will wear shorts every day. You will overpack if you plan for anything else. See our First Time in Punta Cana guide for a full weather breakdown by month.

FAQ

Do I need a plug adapter for Punta Cana?

US and Canadian travelers do not — the DR uses Type A/B outlets at 110V. UK, EU, and AU travelers need an adapter.

Can I bring sunscreen in my carry-on?

Yes, in containers 3.4 oz / 100ml or smaller. Larger bottles must go in checked luggage.

Are there laundry services at resorts?

Yes, but they're pricey. Bring enough clothing for the trip length + 1 day.

What should I wear to a Caribbean beach club?

Swimwear + one statement piece: a cover-up, kimono, linen shirt, or bright dress. Comfortable slides. Sunglasses.

What should I pack for Festopia Punta Cana specifically?

The standard Caribbean list above plus one theme-night outfit and one comfortable pair of shoes you can dance in. Full details go out with your booking confirmation once you reserve your package.
