This guide was built in August 2026, which is early in the announcement cycle for a Caribbean events year. Rather than guess, every event is labelled:

• Confirmed — an official 2027 date has been published by the organiser, or the date is fixed by law or the religious calendar.
• Expected — a long-running annual event with a stable pattern, but no published 2027 date yet.
• TBA — the event matters to travellers, but the 2027 edition has not been scheduled or confirmed to return.

January Events

January is the country's quiet-luxury month: dry, breezy, and busy with pilgrimage and wildlife rather than parades.

Día de Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia — Higüey, January 21 (Confirmed)

The single largest religious gathering in the country. Hundreds of thousands of Dominicans travel to the Basílica de Higüey, a striking modernist arch of a church about 45 minutes inland from Punta Cana. It is a national holiday, so expect closed offices and heavy traffic on the Higüey road.

Humpback whale season — Samaná Bay (Confirmed season, roughly mid-January to late March)

Thousands of North Atlantic humpbacks migrate into the warm, shallow water of Samaná Bay to mate and calve. This is one of the most reliable large-wildlife encounters in the Caribbean, and it is a legally regulated activity with permitted operators and boat limits.

Planning notes: Samaná is a three-to-four-hour drive from Punta Cana and about two and a half from Santo Domingo, so most travellers stay in Las Terrenas or Samaná town for at least one night rather than doing a same-day round trip. February is the peak of the season.

LIDOM playoffs — Santo Domingo, Santiago, La Romana (Expected)

Dominican winter baseball runs from October into January, and the round-robin and final series land in the first weeks of the year. The atmosphere at Estadio Quisqueya or Estadio Cibao is closer to a football derby than a Major League game — brass bands, dancers between innings, and a crowd that never sits. Note that the 2027 Caribbean Series itself is being hosted in Hermosillo, Mexico, February 1–7, not in the Dominican Republic; the Dominican champion travels there.

February is the biggest events month in the country by a wide margin, and the reason a lot of travellers plan a Dominican Republic trip at all.

Dominican Carnival — nationwide, every Sunday in February (Expected)

Carnaval dominicano is not one event. Through February, towns and cities hold their own weekly parades, each with its own characters and mask traditions, building toward the February 27 Independence Day weekend. Costumes are handmade, often over months, and the humour is satirical rather than pageant-polished. Entry is free almost everywhere — you stand on the street with everyone else.

2027 status: no committee has published 2027 dates as of August 2026. The recurring pattern is Sundays in February — which fall on February 7, 14, 21 and 28 in 2027 — with a closing parade tied to Independence Day on Saturday, February 27. Treat that as the planning window, not a booked date.

Independence Day — February 27 (Confirmed)

Independence from Haiti in 1844, and the emotional peak of carnival season. Expect military parade, fireworks, and the biggest street crowds of the year, particularly in Santo Domingo and La Vega. In 2027 it falls on a Saturday, which historically produces heavier travel demand and fuller hotels.

If you only make one Dominican trip built around an event, make it carnival — it is the one week the whole country is performing for itself rather than for visitors.

March Events

Desfile Nacional de Carnaval — Santo Domingo Malecón (Expected)

The national parade closes the carnival season, staged along the Malecón in Santo Domingo with delegations from every province plus invited groups from other Latin American countries. April & Semana Santa

Because Easter falls on March 28 in 2027, Semana Santa lands almost entirely in March — a genuinely useful quirk. Travellers who normally avoid the Easter crush will find early April unusually calm, and the shoulder-season pricing window opens earlier than in most years.

What Semana Santa looks like on the ground: domestic tourism peaks, beaches near cities (Boca Chica, Juan Dolio, Las Terrenas) get extremely full, alcohol sale rules tighten in some municipalities on Good Friday, and rivers in Jarabacoa and Constanza fill with Dominican families. June Events

June belongs to Cabarete, a wind-sport town about 20 minutes east of Puerto Plata that punches far above its size.

Corales Puntacana Championship — Punta Cana, July 12–18, 2027 (Confirmed)

The Dominican Republic's PGA TOUR stop, and one of the very few Dominican events with a firm 2027 date this far out. The ninth edition is scheduled for July 12–18, 2027 at Corales Golf Club, a cliff-edge course on the Puntacana Resort side of the destination. Who it suits: golf travellers obviously, but also anyone who wants a Punta Cana trip with a daytime anchor. July is hot and humid, so plan morning rounds and afternoon shade.

Festival del Merengue y Ritmos Caribeños — Santo Domingo (Expected)

The country's flagship free music festival, staged along the Malecón in Santo Domingo. The 2026 edition ran July 26 to August 4. Commemorating the 1863 restoration war against Spain, and a major date in Santiago, where the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración dominates the skyline. Expect concerts, civic events and a long weekend of domestic travel.

August is hurricane-season shoulder territory. It is a fine month to visit with flexible plans and travel insurance, and a poor month to book something unmovable.

September Events

Master of the Ocean — Cabarete (Expected)

The only competition in the world that crowns an all-around ocean athlete across surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, SUP and wingfoiling. The 21st edition ran September 16–20, 2026 in Cabarete. Free to watch, and the town fills with an international riding crowd.

September is the statistical peak of Atlantic hurricane season. Attendance is fine, plans should be flexible, and rates across the north coast are at their lowest.

October Events

LIDOM season opener — nationwide (Expected)

Dominican winter baseball starts in mid-October: Licey and Escogido in Santo Domingo, Águilas in Santiago, Toros in La Romana, Estrellas in San Pedro de Macorís. If you want one authentically Dominican night out that has nothing to do with tourism, this is it.

Dominican Republic Jazz Festival — Puerto Plata, Cabarete, Sosúa (Expected)

November Events

Bachata festivals and dance congresses — Santo Domingo, Santiago, Jarabacoa (Expected)
